Juanita Doak

Juanita Doak, 79, of Hurricane went home to be with the Lord on March 24 after a long illness. She was born in the coal town of Bishop, VA on September 10, 1937. A graduate of Tazewell High School, she married her high school sweetheart, George William Doak, shortly afterwards and settled in Lebanon, VA. Juanita and George moved to Hurricane in 1971. She was preceded in death by her parents Owen and Cornelia Peters, her brother Doug Peters, her sister Jo Slaughter, and her husband George. She is survived by her sister Wilma Silva of Salem, VA, her daughter Susan Smith (Kent) of Edwardsville, IL, and her son Brian Doak of Hurricane. She was “Nana” to Jeremy Smith and his wife Brandy of Wayne, Jon-Michael Smith and his girlfriend Sarah Greenwood of St. Louis, and Julianna Smith of Edwardsville. She was “Gran” to Hannah Justice and her husband Cody, and Caleb Doak and his girlfriend Amy Asbury of Hurricane. She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Kaitlin, Nicholas, and Benjamin, two special nephews Rick Silva and Michael Slaughter and a very special niece Jamie Herbek. Known for her very loving spirit she was especially fond of the wonderful staff at the Teays Valley Center, who took such great care of her over the past several months. She also cherished her many walks and “adventures” with her dear friend and neighbor Helena Bird, and time spent with Robin Totten, who she loved like a daughter. Among her favorite hobbies was trading barbs with her best friend Pastor Mike Edds of Laurinburg, NC. The family wishes to express its warmest gratitude to Jessica and Allison Asbury, Crystal Stepp, and Bobby Levy and a multitude of others too numerous to mention for the loving kindness they have shown. Funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday at Chapman Funeral Home in Hurricane. Friends may visit from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Hubbard Hospice House West (hospicecarewv.org)1606 Kanawha Blvd. West, Charleston WV 25387, who took such loving care of her in her final days.
