William "Bill" Whitten

William Merritt Whitten, 86 of Hurricane passed away August 1, 2017 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington. “Bill” as he was known by family and friends, was born in Leon, Kentucky and was a son of the late James Merritt Whitten and Floramel Foit Whitten Myers. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister Wanda McNeill and son-in-law, John Williamson. He retired from Union Carbide Corp as a chemical production specialist after 42 years of faithful service. It is very well-known among family and friends that wherever you saw Bill, he was usually driving and Janet was always right there with him. They traveled extensively over their life together, visiting many places whether going to Australia, visiting family across the country, camping out or boating. A big part of Bill’s life was also his volunteer work. A humble man, Bill didn’t care for the spotlight, but helping others was something he was passionate about. He volunteered with the Community Cupboard in Hurricane, was a big advocate for many charity organizations and as a member of the Beni Kedem Shrine he often would drive children to their appointments at the Shriner’s Hospitals. Bill was also past president of the Beni Kedem Oriental Band as well as a member of the Putnam Masonic Lodge #139 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Eastern Star Chapter 116. Bill’s soft heart and generous spirit will be missed by his family, friends, and church family at First Baptist Church in Hurricane. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Janet; children, Carla Jean Williamson of South Charleston, James Whitten (Brenda) of Lavon, TX, Pamela Myers of South Charleston, Jolinda Kay Carr (Randy) of Mallinkof, TX, Debra Hodge (Jim) of Beckley and Kelli Kukura (John) of Holly Springs, NC; seven grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; brothers, James Myers (Sandy) of New Hampshire, Tom Myers (Vaughn) of Virginia and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Sunday August 6, 2017 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial with Masonic Graveside Rites will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service, Sunday at the funeral home, with an Eastern Star service beginning at 1:45pm. Donations in Bill’s memory are encouraged to Beni Kedem Transportation Fund, Scottish Rite Language Center or First Baptist Church of Hurricane. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
