Arbutus O'Dell

Arbutus O'Dell, 68, of Hurricane, formerly of Craigsville, departed this Earth on June 17, 2017. She retired from the WV Department of Highways, her final job, after twenty years of service in 2014. Arbutus was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, mother-in-law and friend. She was a 20-year survivor of brain cancer. However, that is just an example of the woman who always beat the odds. She raised two children who adored her and although she did not have the opportunity to graduate from high school, she later obtained her GED and made sure her two children not only graduated from high school, but also graduated from college and then law school. She worked for years, sometimes on Christmas and Thanksgiving, to make sure the generations after her had it better. She was simply the most giving and sweet person imaginable. Arbutus was a true expression of God's love. She loved others more than herself and her life was one of sacrifice. She adored her grandchildren and took every opportunity to spend time with them. She smiled often and put people at ease. Arbutus loved to travel, going to the beach, taking long walks and reading, but her greatest love was spending time with her family. Arbutus was simply the best and now she can rest after a race well run. We love and will miss you . . . but you know that. Arbutus was survived by her loving husband, Larry R. O’Dell of Hurricane: children, Tony L. O’Dell (Jaye) of Hurricane, and Tammy R. Harvey (Shane) of Hurricane; mother, Nora Nickens (Bill) of Swartz Creek MI; sisters, Linda Miller (Tiny) of Flint, MI, and Mary Stanley of Flint, MI; brothers, Lee Stanley of Belle and Dale Stanley of Flint, MI; grandchildren, Courtney Deeds (Donald) of Roanoke, Jonathan O’Dell of Hurricane Andrew O’Dell of Hurricane and Michael Harvey of Hurricane; and a host of extended family and friends. Funeral service will be held at 7:00pm on Friday, June 23, 2017 at St. John United Methodist Church, 4536 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot, WV with the Rev. Dr. Martin Hallett officiating.
