Augusto Portillo

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Dr. Augusto Portillo, has gone to be with his Heavenly Father. He was a man of dedicated passion both to his family and to the patients in his care. Born in Peru, South America, he was the youngest of three sisters and five brothers. Though his parents hoped he would become a priest, he knew his calling was to become a doctor. Through hard work and dedication, he rose to the top of his class at San Marcos University?s School of Medicine where he graduated. He earned an opportunity to come to the United States to do residency at St. Elizabeth?s Hospital in Chicago, IL. From there, he went on to become chief resident at Cook County Hospital (Chicago, IL). While doing his internship, he also completed a preceptorship in Plastic Surgery. To round out his knowledge, he also received training in head and neck tumors, surgery of the hand and cranio-facial anomalies including cleft lip and palate repair. In 1966, he made his home in Charleston, WV where he went into practice with Dr. Clyde Litton and associates. Charleston is also where he and his wife, Jacqueline started their family. His greatest joy was his family; his wife and their three daughters, Holly, Kristi and Danielle. Then later in life, God blessed him with his granddaughters, Sierra and Gabrielle. He loved watching his granddaughters play volleyball for Charleston Catholic and hearing Gabrielle sing with the Appalachian Children?s Chorus. He was busy, spending much of his time with his practice and his patients. Never a boastful man, his greatest reward was seeing the smiles on the faces of parents whose children he helped with his surgical skills. And, with the free time he did have, he loved going out in the yard to throw the Frisbee for his dogs. There are so many stories that can be told about the lifetime of Dr. Portillo from his youth until his passing it would take hundreds of pages to relate. These stories will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and knew him well. Dr. Portillo is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline, on October 25, 2010 they would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. He is also survived by his daughters, Holly Portillo of Hurricane, Kristi Portillo of Hurricane, and Danielle Smith and her husband Eric of Nitro; two granddaughters, Sierra Portillo and Gabrielle Portillo both of Hurricane and sister Emma Portillo of Lima, Peru. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am Thursday October 7, 2010 at The Catholic Church of the Ascension with Father Neil Buchlein officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8pm Wednesday at Chapman Funeral Home, 3941 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane, where a Rosary service will be conducted at 7:45pm.
