Edward J. Grey, MD

Edward Joseph Grey, MD, 65, of Charleston, WV, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at his residence. Eddie, born on July 15, 1953, in Brooklyn, NY, was the son of the late Carl and Catherine Raffa Grey. After growing up in the Brooklyn projects with very little more than a loving family, he earned his associate’s degree in respiratory therapy from Manhattan Community College in 1975. He then moved to West Virginia, where he began a respiratory therapy education program in Beckley. He decided to become a physician in his mid-thirties, earning his medical degree from Marshall University in 1992. Over his career, he taught hundreds of students and physicians in training about the art of medicine and pulmonology as a clinical professor. He owned a thriving pulmonary practice in Charleston before joining Pulmonary Associates of Charleston in 2011. He served as chief of staff of the Charleston Area Medical Center in 2006. He is survived by his children, Carl R. Grey, MD, (Abby) of Winston-Salem, NC, Melissa A. Baldwin (David) of Hurricane, Paul E. Grey of Lewisburg, WV; grandchildren, Channing David Baldwin, Reid Edward Baldwin and Josephine Jean Grey; siblings, Fred Grey, John Grey, Nancy Page, Catherine Nozdrovicky, Joseph Nozdrovicky, Charles Nozdrovicky, and Michael Nozdrovicky, as well as many colleagues and patients and their families. His patients called him Dr. Grey, and his siblings called him Eddie. His mother was so proud of his accomplishments that she called him “Dr. Edward Grey, M.D.” His favorite name of all was G-Pa, which is what the grandchildren that he so adored called him. Dr. Grey worked tirelessly to provide his family with a life better than his own. Despite his intense work schedule as a physician-in-training in his late thirties and early forties, he rarely missed a track meet, dance recital, or soccer match. He was a best friend to his children, and he cherished his grandchildren. His family misses him dearly, and they believe he is the most generous person they will ever know. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, WV, with Ravi Isaiah, CAMC hospital chaplain, officiating. Visitations will be held from 2-5 pm on Sunday and 6-8 pm Monday at the funeral home.
