Eugene Robert "Gene" Zappitelli

Eugene “Gene” Robert Zappitelli Jr., 82, passed away Friday, May 1st, 2015., with his loving wife and daughter by his side. Born July 25th, 1932 in Conneaut, Ohio, he was the son of the late Eugene Zappitelli Sr. and Olympia DiPlacido Zappitelli. He graduated from Conneaut High School in 1950. He was a decorated athlete in both football and baseball. Accordingly, he was an avid football fan, especially of The Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In 1955, Gene received a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration and Accounting from Gannon University in Erie, PA. He worked for Olin Chemical Company in the Human Resources Department and retired after 33 years of service. Gene was a member of The Catholic Church of the Ascension in Hurricane, WV, and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. Gene had a strong love for and dedication to his God and faith, The Love of his Life, Joan, and his family. Gene’s definition of family, however, was rather extensive. He not only loved his blood relatives deeply, but he also cared for the members of his Church, and especially his Small Faith Group. His kindness, gentleness, and love are the characteristics that defined him. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Josephine Zappitelli, as well as his brothers Anthony, Henry (Roselyn), and Edward (Betty.) Surviving Gene are his wife of 54 years, Joan Zappitelli; daughter Angel Dunlap (Mark) of Delaware, OH, and their children Mark, Brian, and Maria; son, Eugene “Bud” R. Zappitelli (Kathleen) of New Albany, OH, and their children, Gabriela, Eugene “Geno” IV, and Dominic; son, John J. Zappitelli (Karen) of Columbus, OH, and their children, Nicole, Sarah, and John; and son James A. Zappitelli (Lorrie) and their children, Alasandra, Casandra, Karlee, Camille, and Sofia. Gene also had 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Additionally, he is survived by his sister Theresa Ozolek of Fountain Hill, AZ, his brother Father Francis Zappitelli of Fountain Hill, AZ, his brother-in-law John Banchich and his wife, Judy, of Port Clinton, OH, and his sister-in-law, Margaret Zappitelli, of Conneaut, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7th, 2015, at The Catholic Church of the Ascension, 905 Hickory Mills Road, Hurricane, WV with the brother of Gene, Father Francis Zappitelli as the celebrant, and Father Harry N. Cramer concelebrating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Conneaut, OH, on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. under the direction of Raisian Funeral Home, Conneaut, OH.
