Jack Shirley Brown

Jack Shirley Brown beloved husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the age of 91. Jack was born June 3, 1935, to the late Mabel McCormick Brown and Ralph D. Brown of Hometown, West Virginia. In addition to his parents, Jack was also preceded in death by his brothers: David Brown and Billy Brown; his sisters: Mona McAllister and Hope Legg; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law: James Harold and Elizabeth Karnes. He graduated from Poca High School and was a United States Army veteran. He spent time in the coal mines as a young man, but worked primarily as a millwright for Union Carbide/Rhone Poulenc in Institute, WV, from which he enjoyed an early retirement in 1987. Jack was a lifelong resident of Putnam County. He and his wife Talma, raised their two children in the Oak Street neighborhood in Teays Valley, near one of his favorite places, Sleepy Hollow Golf Course. Jack played golf for over 50 years and finally made a hole-in-one at Sleepy at age 75. He loved golfing, vacationing, and spending time with family in Myrtle Beach, SC. Post-retirement, Jack and Talma moved to Candlewyck Place in Teays Valley. At various times over the years, they attended St. John United Methodist Church in Scott Depot and Wilkinson United Methodist Church in Hometown. All these places were filled with cherished memories and friends. Jack is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Talma Lee (Karnes); daughter, Teresa Patterson and her husband, James, of Hurricane, WV; son, Robert and his wife, Cissie Bennett, of Myrtle Beach, SC; granddaughter, Kaley Lucas and her husband, Parker, and great-grand-daughter, Violet all of Pittsburgh, PA; granddaughter, Lexi Palmer and her husband, Justin, of Raleigh, NC; grandson, Alex Brown of Charleston, WV; granddaughter, Taylor Moore of Barboursville, WV; grandson, Nathaniel Patterson of Charleston, WV; brother, Harold Brown and his wife, Emma of Buffalo, WV; brother, Dalton Brown and his wife, Betty of Eleanor, WV; brother-in-law, Keith Karnes of Winfield, WV, as well as many special nephews and nieces. Funeral Service for Jack will be 11:00am Friday September 4, 2026, at Chapman Funeral Home in Winfield, WV. Burial will follow at Haven of Rest Memory Gardens in Red House, WV.
