Jerry Lee Engle

Jerry Lee Engle passed away at his home in the community he loved, St. Albans, at the age of 61. Jerry, who was known to all that loved him as Chip, graduated from St. Albans High School in 1975. He worked for Columbus Gas Transmission Corporation for many years. Later Columbia Gas became Columbia Pipeline Group from which Jerry retired. He was an avid chess player and had an extensive chess library. He entered and won chess tournaments throughout the State of West Virginia. For many years Jerry enjoyed riding his bicycle along the streets of St. Albans. He always had a smile on his face and a friendly wave for those he saw along the way. Neighbors spoke of Jerry with a smile and told stories of how he enjoyed setting along the walkway in his community talking to everyone who passed by. Jerry’s enthusiasm for learning did not stop after high school. He believed that the more a person knew the better prepared he would be for life. He studied many topics from movies to space exploration and learned about things so that he could talk to people in various walks of life. Jerry was always willing to help family and friends whenever he could. He loved Rod and Lynn’s beloved dog, Kelly. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Clyde Sr. and Pearl Samples Engle who resided in St. Albans, and a brother, Randy W. Engle who resided in Parkersburg, WV. He is survived by his sister, Betty Engle Farmer and her husband, Bill of Deltaville, Va. His brothers, Charles C. Engle Jr. and his wife, Patti of Elkview; Cody P. Engle and his wife, Franci of Winfield, Rodney J. Engle and his wife, Lynn of Winfield; Ted R. of St. Albans and Richard G. of Glen Allen, Va. He is also survived by one nephew, David Farmer and his wife, Emily and their two sons, Christopher and Andrew of White Stone, Va. Jerry’s request was to be cremated. A private memorial honoring Jerry’s life will be held at a later date.
