John William Barna

John William Barna, 84, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the CAMC Medical ICU. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and family. John was born June 26, 1930 in McDowell County, WV and was raised by his immigrant parents, Michael Barna and Mary Zulick from Certizne, Slovakia. He has been a resident of St. Albans for 60 years. He was raised as a member of Saint Mary’s Carpatho Russian Orthodox Church in Elkhorn, WV, which served as the focal point of the family. He was a dedicated member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral and was active in the life of the church for the past 60 years. He was preceded in death by his brothers Peter, Paul, Michael and sisters, Mary Eastone and Anne Merguc. He is survived by wife of 58 years Betty Carter Barna; children; Anna (Dana Given Campbell, II) and their children, Lauren Elizabeth and John Given; Matthew (Lisa Michele) and their children, Christopher John and Amber Nicole. He was an adoring uncle of many nieces and nephews. He graduated from Elkhorn High School, Elkhorn WV. He was the quarterback when the Elkhorn Indians won their only county football championship. He was a graduate of Bluefield College and Virginia Tech in the field of Mechanical Engineering. He served in the Army Corp of Engineers and was stationed in the Panama Canal zone. He was a long standing employee of Union Carbide Corporation, serving over 35 years as the Construction/Craft Manager in Engineering Technology and Services Division, and retired as Project Manager at the Institute Manufacturing Site. He was an avid Virginia Tech Hokie Fan. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a warm, kind, loving, and humble man who was respected by all. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who led a life devoted to his family and his faith. Visitation will be held Friday, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. with Trisagion Prayers at 7:45 p.m., at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 6th Ave., St. Albans and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at St. George Orthodox Cathedral with The Very Reverend Father Olof Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans with military honors. Attendees are invited to Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans for a memorial dinner afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. George Cathedral, P.O. Box 2044, Charleston, WV 25327. The family would like to express our gratitude to the wonderful and caring staff of CAMC General Hospital’s Emergency Department and MICU.
