John Carl Estes

A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Carl Estes of Saint Albans, passed away on August 13, 2017 at the age of 91. Born in Putnam County in 1925, he was the son of the late Grover Cleveland Estes and Clara Ethel (Call) Estes. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Joy Kelley Estes, and all of his siblings: Anna Marie Casto, Mary Elizabeth Beattie, Gladys Short, Earl Estes, James P. “Dick” Estes and Clarence Darrell “John” Estes. John Carl graduated from Hurricane High School and was a World War II veteran. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1944-1946 and was honorably discharged August 1946 with the rank of Corporal. He was employed by Union Carbide Institute plant as Foreman of the Reclamation Salvage Department from 1949-1984. A very independent and hard-working man, he was a master craftsman in woodworking as well as masonry. He was a member of the former Saint Luke United Methodist Church. He is survived by three daughters; Lynn Romano (Patrick), Elizabeth Peters (Ken), and Carla Samples as well as grandchildren; Sarah Lynn (Matt) Hyatt, Lauren Elizabeth (Chad) Onken, Courtney Leigh (Chace) Tracy, Brian (Annalee) Peters and Mark (Kasey) Peters; great-grandchildren include, Presley Lauren Hyatt, Marilyn Claire Onken, Charlotte Joy Onken, Madelynn Marie Peters, Elijah Samuel Peters, Gabriel Ward Tracy and Abigail Grace Tracy. Funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Friday, August 18, 2017 at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans with the Rev. Kenneth S. Peters officiating. Entombment with military honors will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, 168 Old Turnpike Road, Parkersburg, WV 26104, where his daughter, Rev. Beth Peters is Pastor.
