Lawrence Herbert Rogers

Lawrence Herbert Rogers 85, of Hurricane, WV passed away peacefully in the early morning of July 30, 2026. He was born to the late Herbert and Ruby Rogers on May 10, 1941 in Cabin Creek, WV. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Christopher; and brother, James. Lawrence was a 1961 Graduate of East Bank High School, earned a Bachelors in Mathematics from Marshall University and later completed his Master’s Degree in Mathematics. Lawrence was a High School mathematics teacher at Ross Beatty High School in Cassopolis, MI for most of his career; he was also the coach of the High School Golf and Track & Field teams, leading each team to state championship titles. After retiring from teaching in high school he finished his career as a Mathematics Professor at Ivy Tech Community College. At the young age of 15, Lawrence suffered a tragic, near fatal hunting accident that destroyed his left knee and left him with a left leg that was one solid fused bone from hip to ankle. Despite missing over a year of school and a long recovery he never viewed himself as disabled and used his injury as an example that one can accomplish even the seemingly impossible with enough determination and perseverance being an avid sportsman: riding bicycles and motorcycles, snow and water skiing, running, golfing, playing basketball, baseball and many other activities he could have let his injury prevent him from participating in. In his free time Lawrence was an avid golfer, downhill skier, runner and water sports enthusiast. He was a loved and respected member of his community, mentoring dozens of students over his decade long tenure as a high school teacher and coach. He loved his family and friends and was unfailingly loyal and dedicated to those in his life. During his final years he produced dozens of portrait drawings of his family and friends, freely offering them to the subjects. Lawrence is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Janet; son, Scott; and his sister, Jenny Cantley. There will be no services at this time.
