Paul Edwin Ellis

Paul Edwin Ellis, 96 of Hurricane passed away, Sunday November 17, 2013 at his residence in the arms of his sons after a long life. Born August 18, 1917 in Hurricane, he was a son of the late Cyle Otis and Mary Eunice Eggleston Ellis. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother Mervin Ellis and sister Eleanor Billups. Mr. Ellis was a 1936 graduate of Hurricane High School, where he had the distinct honor of being Valedictorian. He served his country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre. After peace, he was stationed in Japan. He retired in 1967 from Union Carbide Corp in the Process Safety department. Mr. Ellis and his wife were longtime members of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane, where he served as Deacon, Chair of the Trustee Board and sang in the choir. Some of his other activities included memberships in the Hurricane Lions Club, Putnam County Democrat Club, American Political Item Collectors Association and the Upper Vandalia Historical Society. An avid collector of soda bottles, Life magazines, tobacco tins, WV license plates and other various items, he was most proud of his collections of political memorabilia. He enjoyed watching baseball on television, but was happiest when attending Hurricane High School games. His interest in politics never waned and he was a proud Democrat all his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Ruth; sons, Michael Ellis of Hurricane and Edwin Ellis and wife Rebecca of Fraziers Bottom; grandchildren, Marian (Gary) Smith, Reuben (Kathryn) Ellis, Abe (Laura) Ellis, Ben (Savannah) Ellis and Laura (Lee) Cummings; great-grandchildren, Blane (Alex) Lewis, Weston Smith, Laurel and Louden Cummings, Jayden, Cooper, Dehlia, Kaiya, Luke and Autumn Ellis; sister, Wanda Gunther of Hurricane and brother, Clyde Ellis of Hurricane. Funeral service will be held at 11:00am Thursday November 21, 2013 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane with Dr. James Lutz and Rev. Doug Heidt officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Friends may visit the family from 6:00-8:00pm Wednesday at the funeral home. The family has requested no floral contributions.
