Samuel Madison Shafer

Samuel Madison Shafer, 56, of Winfield, passed away on August 2, 2023, surrounded by family. Sam was a proud 1985 graduate of Hurricane High School. Living in Winfield, this led to some heated conversations with his wife and daughters during the week of the annual War on 34 Winfield-Hurricane football game. After high school he enlisted in the US Army. Many stories were told by him about his time abroad, especially during his time in Italy. After leaving the military in 1988, Sam traveled the United States working in nuclear power plants. Next, he began his employment with IUOE Local 132 as a crane operator. Cranes became his life’s work, and he enjoyed pointing out places he helped build to friends and family. With family, he enjoyed fishing and kayaking. He took many fishing trips around the state with his nephews and friends. He looked forward to traveling south in the summers, especially when a large group of friends and family went together. History was a passion, and he enjoyed learning about alien life, both past and present and anyone close knew he would do his best to convince you that it was real. Sam was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Samantha Rae Shafer' his mother, Brenda Kay Bowles Shafer; paternal grandparents: Clifton and Kathryn Shafer; his maternal grandparents: Harry Madison and Eula Gertrude Bowles; and nephew, Ryan Nicholas Young. Surviving is his wife of 32 years, Paula Shafer; daughters of whom he was very proud of: Brenna Marie and Madison Olivia; father, Jackie Wayne Shafer of Hurricane; sisters: Alicia Kaye Shafer Young (Larry) 0f Hurricane, Kathryn Renee Shafer Hogsett (Chuck) of Mineral Wells and Trina Lynn Shafer of Hurricane; nieces and nephews: Brandon Young (Sarah), Rachel Debusca (Justin), Rebekah Hogsett (Tanner), Jacob Hogsett (Liz) and Remington Drury (Riley); mother-in-law: Grace Wilt; and sister-in-law: Ruth Dent (Scott). The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff at CAMC Memorial, especially the nurses of CPICU and 6 Front for their professional, yet loving care.
