Sherry Elkins

Beloved mother, wife, sister, teacher, church member. These are just a few of the roles that Sherry Briddell Elkins embodied over the span of her 53 years. While gone too soon, she certainly made a huge impact on all those who knew her. In the weeks before her death on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, many spoke of her enduring positivity over the course of a long illness. According to family and friends, they will remember how Sherry was always thinking of others, even during times when she could have been focused inward. Her hope was to use her diagnosis as a tool to minister to others about God’s love. Born on November 27, 1961, in Lexington, KY, Sherry was the second of three daughters of Evelyn Briddell and the late Harry Briddell, Jr. She married James Westley Elkins, I on August 3, 1985. An active member of her church, Teays Valley Church of God, Sherry served for many years as a Sunday school teacher in the Children’s Ministry. Her professional life was also devoted to children at King’s Way Christian EduCare in Nitro. For over a decade, she was the beloved head Toddler Teacher. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, a daughter, Jennifer Buckreis (Andrew), a son, James Westley Elkins, II, two sisters, Susan Briddell and Teresa Nez (Bill), as well as three nieces and numerous cousins. A Memorial Service will be held at 3pm on Saturday, June 6 at Teays Valley Church of God in Scott Depot. There will be no visitation prior to the service. You will have an opportunity to pay your respects following the service. A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Monday, June 8, with a funeral scheduled for 10:30am on Tuesday, June 9 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd, Lexington, KY. A grave-side service will follow the funeral at Evergreen Memory Gardens in Paris, KY. In lieu of flowers, Sherry requested that donations go to fund the installation of a Toddler Playground at her former place of employment, King’s Way Christian EduCare.
