Wendell Morris Doss

Wendell “Wink” Morris Doss, 79, of Scott Depot, WV, peacefully left this earthly plane and ascended to heaven on May 27th, 2014. He travelled the world, was devoted to his wife, family, and church community at Scott Depot Christ Fellowship, and wore many titles: pitcher for the Milwaukee Braves, sheriff, sports buyer, sunday school teacher, owner and operator of construction companies. Titles meant little to him; he was most concerned with providing and living fully. Ever generous, jovial, yet reserved, he had kind ways with people. Wink could solve round peg/square hole dilemmas with rare creativity. He had the ability and courage to thoughtfully deliver information no one wanted to say and have the recipient like him even more afterward. He was most at home in nature and often gave directions by tree type or shape instead of street names. Always keen-eyed, he collected unusual rocks and tree limbs that he’d fashion into staffs for walks through the woods. Wink was easy to be around even in silence. In his world, sweets should be enjoyed daily by everyone; cookies were the first offering for any visitor, and he loved to feed people. Consistently tinkering and busy, he always had time to help anyone. His daily actions matched his words and faith. Honest and simple with an enormous full spirit, those closest to him are blessed and honored to have shared time with him: son Barry & Vicki of Cedar Park, TX; son Don of Cedar Park, TX; daughter Debra & Don of Jarrell, TX; daughter Joy of Charleston, WV. Close friend: Reidun “Reagan” Øvrebø of Charleston, WV. Grandchildren: Andrew, James & Elizabeth, Jessica, Victoria-Chase & Royce, Joshua, Cody, Kelsey, Tori, Keira, and Henry. Great-Grandchild nearly here: River-Chase. Brothers: James & Jewell of Charleston, WV, and Montgomery & Sue of Danville, WV. All miss the ability to hug him, share food and laughter with him, and hear his uncommon phrases and perspectives on life. At his request, there will be no service. Private burial will take place Friday, May 30th, at Memory Gardens, Low Gap, WV. A memorial gathering will be held later this year during his favorite time: Thanksgiving. In lieu of cards, flowers, or food, the family requests that you have a dinner with family or friends, and sit down around the table enjoying each other and the time you have together. That’s what Wink loved. And if you have a favorite story about dad, share it with each other. If he’d allowed an inscription on his grave, we would have written something like this: Here lie the bones worn by a man, noble, with character sound as an aged oak.
