Darrell Gene Stoops

Gene Stoops 91, of Scott Depot, WV, passed away on Sept. 9, 2026, at home. He was born on June 25, 1935, to the late Art and Kathleen Sadler Stoops in Princeton, IN. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son and daughter in-law: Rob and Bridget Stoops; and a sister, Carolyn Stoops Miller. Gene started his work career with G.C. Murphy Company, which later became Ames Dept. Stores. He started as a stock boy and worked his way up, retiring over 50 years later as a District Manager. Not one to slow down, he then went on to enjoy being surrounded by his passion for golf at Scarlett Oaks Golf Course as a Pro Shop Manager for over 10 years. He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church in Scott Depot, WV, for over 30 years. He was known for his love of his family, friends, the sun, beach and bike rides. Gene is survived by his significant other, Barbara Southern; children: Dennis Stoops (Pam) of Sellersburg, IN, Coleen Callahan (Steve) of Melbourne, FL, Jennifer Vance (David) of Winfield, WV, and Mary Poquette (Ryan) of Scott Depot, WV; grandchildren: Caitlin Melson (Tony) of Indianapolis, IN, Meredith Hamilton (Eric) of Granada Hills, CA, Cameron Stoops (Emma) of Hurricane, WV, Jarod Callahan (Brianna) of Middletown, NY, Hunter Vance of Morgantown, WV, Nate Knox and Nora Knox both of Scott Depot, WV; great grandchildren: Atticus and Sybil Melson of Indianapolis, IN, and Archie, Louie and Isla Stoops of Hurricane, WV; brother, Bill Stoops of New Albany, IN; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Gene’s Life will be at 12:00 p.m., Saturday September 26, 2026, at St. John United Methodist Church, located at 4536 Teays Valley Road Scott Depot WV 25560, with Rev. Jarrod Caltrider officiating. Friends may visit the family an hour prior to the service at church.
