James William Thornton

James William Thornton, 74 of Eleanor, previously of Hurricane, passed away on May 8, 2016 at Hubbard Hospice House West. Jim is resting in peace now with Jesus. He was born on February 12, 1942 to Millard F. and Jewell G. Tincher Thornton (which was also his mother’s birthday). Also preceding him in death were his siblings and in laws; Harold (Francis)Thornton, Ronald (Tressa) Thornton; Inez (Edward) Pauley, Hazel (Lyle) Miles, Dortha (Glen) Paul, Jane (Dallas) Carpenter, Olen Caldwell, and Ralph Deel; father and mother in law Herschel and Mary Browning; and brother in law William T. Browning. James was a very intelligent man in his era. He loved his gardening and the “little ones”. Jim worked for several Union Construction Companies in his lifetime, naming Grahams Concrete as a truck driver and Union Carbide and a heavy equipment operator/driver. He retired from Union Carbide with 27 years of service. In his earlier years he loved to hunt and fish and also did a little “Dirt Track” stock car racing. James is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Carol Jean Browning Thornton of Hurricane; daughter Carla Elaine Mercer of Wake Forest NC; son Richard Leon Thornton(Jill) of Hurricane; grandchildren Seth and Derek Lester, William Mercer, Justin (Mary Grez) Thornton, Ezra Thornton; Great grandchildren Hailey and Jacob Thornton, Donovan and Salem Boss; step great grandchild Brendon Doss and their mother Breana Boss; sisters Imogene Caldwell and Louise Deel; brother in law Russell (Margaret) Browning; and several nieces and nephews. Jim will be missed by family and friends. We would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff for their knowledge, kindness and loving care. At James request, he will be cremated and there will be no services held at this time. There will be a private burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., West, Charleston, WV 25387.
