Joseph Azevedo

To all creatures under Heaven, there is a time to be born and a time to die. Joe's time to be born was November 15, 1945 and to die on August 9, 2016. Joe was the first child of Portuguese immigrant Joaquim M. Azevedo and his wife, Velma Patton Azevedo. He grew up on the West Side of Charleston and was a 1963 graduate of Charleston Catholic High School. Among his first work experiences were Charleston theaters, the Virginian and the Rialto. He worked at the theaters for about nine years, then the Charleston Newspaper for over a year. Joe was hired by C & P telephone, later became Verizon Communications, where he worked until retirement. After retirement, he worked off and on at the Mardi Gras Casino and Resort. Joe enjoyed bowling, going on adventures with grandchildren, and watching old Westerns. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Hurricane, W.Va. Surviving Joe are his wife of 21 years, Edith Seanze Strickland; children, Gwen (Mike) Secorsky of Sterling, Va., Amy Azevedo (John Flores) of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Holly Winell of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; step-children, Terry (Dee) Fogarty, Carrie (Chris) Chafin, and Erin (Richie) Poe; grandchildren/step-grandchildren, Richard (Hope) Winell, Jacob and Michael Winell, Samantha and Michael Secorsky, Avi and Sean Flores, Breanne and Danielle Vega, and Henry Poe; and also great-grandsons/step-great-grandson, Damien and Ryker Winell and Brycen Morgan. He also leaves behind siblings, Alfred (Marjorie) Azevedo, Albert Azevedo, and Linda Baughman. The family would like to thank the staff at Hubbard Hospice West for all their care and compassion, Dr. Cohen at the CAMC Cancer Center, and the doctors at Kanawha Urologists. We especially want to thank the home care hospice staff, Erin Cornell and Becky Thompson. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, at Chapman Funeral Home in Hurricane. Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, August 11, at the funeral home with Pastor Rob Laukator, of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.
