Roger D. "Pogo" Sheets

Roger Dale "Pogo" Sheets, 81, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026. Born in Dawes, West Virginia to Mary Louise Allman Sheets and Romie Richard Sheets, Roger lived the majority of his life in Winfield, West Virginia. Roger was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 56 years, Monna. He was a proud father to his daughters, and nothing made him happier than time with his grandchildren, sharing stories, teaching them something new, or simply being together. He was their biggest supporter and steady encourager. Roger was a devoted son, showing daily the steadfast love that characterized every relationship in his life. One of the fortunate few able to build a career around his passions, Roger owned and operated Sheets' Texaco in Winfield for many years and later worked as a truck driver. Both combined his love of automobiles with his genuine enjoyment of meeting new people and visiting with friends. Known for his easy smile, Roger never met a stranger. He was the first to offer a helping hand and always followed through. No role was more central to Roger's identity than that of volunteer firefighter. For an extraordinary 65 years, he dedicated himself to the Winfield Volunteer Fire Department. He could be found at the fire station nearly every day and remained an active part of the department he loved until the very end. His commitment, leadership, and steady presence helped shape generations of firefighters. His quiet example of selflessness, humility, and dedication left an indelible mark on his community. Roger found happiness in life's simple pleasures: a fishing pole in one hand, a cup of coffee in the other, surrounded by good friends and, in later years, his grandchildren. He measured happiness in family, friendships, and the opportunity to help someone in need. Roger was preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife of 56 years, Monna (Booth) Sheets; his parents; an infant daughter; his brother, Gary Sheets; his in-laws, Oran and Gladys "Pit" Booth; his sisters-in-law, "Nook" and Phyllis Booth and Barbara "Bobbie" Magoun; his brothers-in-law, Warren Magoun, "Pooch" Booth, and Doug Robertson; and his lifelong best friend and fishing partner, Gary Smith. He is survived by his daughters: Jonni (Scott) Winter, Ronni Sheets, and Kristi (Tony) Gillispie; and by his grandchildren—the loves and greatest joys of his life—Whitley and Gavin Winter, and Garrett, Nate, and Kooper Gillispie. He is also survived by his sisters, Wanda Robertson and Shelia (John) Dent; his brother-in-law, Bill Booth; his sister-in-law, Brenda Sheets; and many dearly loved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends. In measuring a life by the love one shared, the good one did, and the difference one made, Roger was one of the best of us. He will be loved and missed beyond measure.
