Sara Horn

Sara Gene Duga Horn of St. Albans passed away on September 18, 2015 after a courageous eight year-long battle against pulmonary fibrosis and congestive heart failure. Sara, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, now rests in heaven, where she experiences eternal joy and eternal peace, the peace that "passes all understanding," as it radiates from her Savior Jesus Christ. She will be greatly missed by her entire family and all those who knew her. She was truly a Proverbs 31 woman. She was well known by her family as one who always put the needs of the other person before her own in any situation. Sara was a committed Christian her entire life and attended Maranatha Fellowship Church, St. Albans. She is survived by her husband, William B. Horn, daughter; Patricia (Tom) Cribbs, son William A. (Vicki) Horn , son James (Diana) Horn, and nephews David (Kathy) Coleman, and Allen and Steven Duga. Her grandchildren are Jonathan and Jason Cribbs, Andrew and Lydia Horn and Andrea (John) Fisher, Matthew (Nina) Horn, and Rebekah (Michael) Anderson. Great-grandchildren are Isaac, Sofia, and Isaiah Fisher; Jude, Calliope, and Luca Horn; and Amare’ and Joby Anderson. Sara was born on May 8, 1928 in Bellaire, Ohio, to late Allen and Margaret Porter Duga. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Maxine Coleman and brother, Allen Duga. Her family relocated to Canton, Ohio after her first grade in school because of the lack of jobs in Bellaire during the Great Depression. She graduated Canton Lincoln High School in 1946 and St. Lukes School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio in 1949. Sara and her husband Bill were only acquaintances in High School, both members of the class of 1946 at Lincoln High School in Canton, Ohio. The events leading up to their marriage however, were unusual. In the spring of 1949, unbeknownst to either, both were studying in Cleveland, Sara at St. Lukes School of Nursing, and Bill in the Engineering school of Case Western Reserve University.) In the spring of that year (a few of Sara's nursing classes were held there) they met each other quite by chance while walking on the Reserve campus between classes. Things then progressed, as they will between an eager couple of marrying age, and they were married on December 16, 1950 in Canton. As a nurse, Sara worked at Altman Hospital in Canton, Ohio, Babies and Childrens Hospital and The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta, Ohio, and CAMC in Charleston. She retired from nursing in 1982 because of severe back problems. Sara led a full and fruitful life, becoming much loved by her children, grandchildren, and finally by her great grandchildren. She had her first challenge as a mother during the years of World War II, when her mother went to work in the defense industries and left Sara in charge of her home, which included managing two younger siblings. This responsibility presented many challenges. She presented an incomparable role model for her children, with loving and steadfast guidance. The results were three fine adults, each of whom have since played a huge role in her life, and a tightly knit and loving extended family. Sara and her husband enjoyed travel in the years since her retirement, both in America where she traveled to every state except Wisconsin and Alaska, especially visiting her family members who moved to other parts of our country. The most memorable trips outside America were to Israel with a group from her church in 1994, and to Bangladesh in 1997, where her son Jim was a medical missionary. Funeral service will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Maranatha Fellowship Church, 2910 Kanawha Terrace, St. Albans with Pastor Terry Hogue officiating. Graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, September 24, 2015 at West Lawn Cemetery, 1919 7th Street NW, Canton, Ohio Friends may call 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans.
