Sheila Stafford Owens

On August 14, 2026, Mrs. Sheila Stafford Owens passed away after a brief illness. Born and raised in Welch, WV, she graduated with honors from Welch High School, where she was a majorette and played the bells. Sheila attended Marshall University, where she met her best friend and the love of her life, Tom (TRO) Owens. She completed her degree in Education. She was a caring and devoted elementary school teacher. She taught at Edison Elementary, Anne Bailey Elementary, and Central Elementary Schools, later retiring from Kanawha County Schools after 27 years. Sheila was a member of St. John United Methodist Church in Scott Depot, WV. She loved being surrounded by her family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Sheila enjoyed family gatherings at home, the beach, visiting Canaan Valley, making cards, playing cards, bridge club, and reading her cozy mystery novels. She loved travelling the world, visiting Hawaii, Alaska, the United Kingdom and France. Her famous chocolate chip cookies will be greatly missed. Sheila was a kind person who never met a stranger and typically always had a smile on her face. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents: Marie and Edward Stafford II. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Tom (TRO) Owens; brother, John Stafford III (Vicki); children: Mark Owens, Amy Donovan (PJ), Scott Owens (Dana), and Mary Beth Laughery (Mike). Her beloved grandchildren: Skyler, Dallas, Jared, Tucker and Cooper Owens, Megan, Jennifer, Sean and Thomas Donovan, Riley, Kate and Emily Owens, and Tanner, Toby and Tyler Laughery; 3 great grandchildren; and a sweet golden doodle named Truffles, whom also loved her very much. Thanks to her obvious, uncontested, unabashed favorite grandson, Thomas P Donovan for helping to draft this (sorry, Riley and Tanner!) A Celebration of Life for Sheila will be 4:00 pm Sunday September 13, 2026 at St. John United Methodist Church at 4536 Teays Valley Road, in Scott Depot, WV.
